Both put inspections on a screen instead of paper. Only one lets the technician keep hold of the spanner.
A digital checklist is still a checklist: the technician stops, takes off a glove, picks up a tablet and taps through fields. FieldPal is voice-first: they talk, and the structured record fills in behind them.
Who this is for
Teams with field technicians, engineers or inspectors completing structured records at the point of work: job sheets, inspection reports, warranty claims, permits, defect logs. You are probably already looking at SafetyCulture, or already using it.
What SafetyCulture does well
It is the most recognised inspection app on the market, and it earned that position. The template library is enormous and public. The mobile app is polished and workers pick it up without training. It runs offline and syncs when coverage returns. Pricing is published and you can sign up this afternoon without talking to anyone. If your problem is getting inspections off paper by next month, it solves that problem well.
What FieldPal does instead
FieldPal is voice-first. The technician talks. FieldPal listens, understands what was said, and fills the structured record behind the scenes. There's no tapping, no scrolling, no putting the tools down. It runs on RealWear head-mounted devices as well as phones and tablets, so it works where holding a screen isn't an option at all.
Structured capture in the field, head to head
We'd rather be straight about this than pretend otherwise. On template library, free tier and self-serve sign-up, SafetyCulture is ahead of us and we aren't going to dress that up.

The argument
Hands-free isn’t a feature. It is the whole point.
An automotive technician with a vehicle on a ramp. A wind turbine engineer forty metres up. A police collision investigator at a scene in the rain.
In every case the same thing is true: picking up a tablet means stopping the work.
That is why records get written up at the end of the shift, from memory, in a portacabin. It is why detail goes missing and warranty claims get rejected for thin evidence.
FieldPal runs on RealWear head-mounted devices as well as phones and tablets, so the technician describes what they are seeing while they are seeing it. SafetyCulture has no head-mounted support at all.
Nobody has to build the form first
A digital checklist only exists once somebody has sat down and built it. Every question, every conditional branch, every dropdown.
For a straightforward safety walkaround, that is an afternoon’s work. For the variety of records a service operation actually produces, it is a project with a budget and a start date.
FieldPal takes what the technician says about the job and structures it into the record. The work doesn’t have to be predicted in advance, because the technician is describing what happened rather than navigating what someone assumed would happen.
Field service isn’t the same as compliance inspection
A safety walkaround is the same every time. That is exactly what makes it a good checklist.
A fault diagnosis is different every time. The technician follows the evidence, and the evidence goes where it goes. Force that into a fixed sequence of tickboxes and you either lose the detail or produce a form nobody finishes.
SafetyCulture is built around the repeatable case. FieldPal is built around the variable one.
Capture is only half of FieldPal
SafetyCulture is an inspection platform. That is a fair description of what it sets out to be, and we aren’t going to mark it down for not being something else.
FieldPal also includes FieldPal Find: voice-driven access to the manuals, service bulletins and repair history your organisation already holds. The technician asks a question out loud and gets an answer grounded in your own documentation, not a general-purpose model’s guess.
And Find can interrupt the form
This is the part that is hard to picture until you see it. The two halves aren’t sequential: a technician can stop mid-record, ask something, and carry on with the answer in hand.
“Tell me what the pressure should be before I mark this as good or not.”
The reading is already in the record. The question is answered from the manufacturer’s data sheet. The technician then marks it pass or fail knowing which it is, rather than writing down a number now and finding out later that it was out of range.
A checklist can’t do that, because a checklist has no idea what the number ought to be. It is a form: it records what you tell it.
For most service operations, the time lost hunting for an answer is larger than the time lost to paperwork. If both problems are on your list, they can sit on one platform and one licence.
Which one is right for you
Choose SafetyCulture if
- Your requirement is genuinely repeatable safety and compliance inspections
- You want an ongoing free plan rather than a trial that ends
- A large public template library saves you real setup effort
- Per-seat budget is the binding constraint
- Your users are supervisors and managers with a screen in hand, not technicians with tools in hand
Choose FieldPal if
- Your users are working with their hands and can't hold a tablet
- The records that matter vary job to job
- Record quality is costing you money in rejected warranty claims, failed audits or disputed work
- You want the same platform to answer technical questions, not just collect data
- You are deploying to head-mounted devices, or expect to be
See it against your own paperwork
Send us one of your actual job sheets or inspection forms. We'll show you a technician completing it by voice, hands free, on your own device type, with no template building beforehand. That is rather the point.
