Claude will admit when it is unsure. It still has no way of knowing what your network fixed last month.
Of the general assistants, this is the one most likely to say "I am not certain", which matters in safety-critical work. It doesn't change where the answer has to come from, or what has to happen afterwards.
Who this is for
Teams already using Claude for technical or document-heavy work, weighing whether it covers the frontline case.
What Claude does well
Long technical documents, handled carefully. It holds a large amount of material in view at once, follows an argument across a lengthy specification, and is comparatively willing to say it doesn't know rather than producing something plausible. Projects keep context across a body of work, and connectors let it reach systems that expose an interface to it.
What the frontline still needs
A route to the documentation nobody has uploaded: the OEM portal, the licensed repair database, five years of completed jobs in a service system. Hands-free operation at the machine. And a structured record written into the form your business actually submits.
Head to head
On reasoning over documents you provide, the right-hand column is strong and this page isn't arguing otherwise. The gap is everything before and after that conversation.
| Capability | FieldPal | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning over long technical documents | Yes | Extensive |
| Signals uncertainty rather than guessing | Yes | Yes |
| Grounded in your bulletins and repair history by default | Yes | No |
| Indexed by model, variant and configuration | Yes | No |
| Voice-first, hands-free at the machine | Yes | No |
| Head-mounted devices (RealWear) | Yes | No |
| Fills in a form at all | Yes | No |
| Retained, auditable record tied to a job | Yes | Limited |
The argument
Caution is worth something, and it isn’t enough
Of the general assistants, Claude is the one most likely to tell you it isn’t sure. In safety-critical maintenance that is a real virtue: a hedge is far better than a confident answer about the wrong engine variant.
But being careful about what it doesn’t know doesn’t supply what it never had. The bulletin that covers this fault, the eleven previous occurrences across your sites, the revision that applies to this serial number: none of that is available to be careful about.
Somebody has to hand it the document
The strength here is reasoning over material you provide. That works when the material is one long specification and there is a person at a desk to upload it.
It doesn’t describe a technician at a vehicle. Nobody is going to attach a 400-page manual, three superseded bulletins and a service history export before asking a question with their hands full. The documentation has to be indexed in advance, scoped to the machine in front of them, and reachable by voice.
The record still has to be filed
The conversation ends with an answer. The job ends with a submitted warranty claim, inspection report or job sheet: structured, attributed, timestamped, and accepted by the system that receives it.
That isn’t something a general assistant does, and it is the half of the work that costs money when it is done badly.
Different jobs
Handing a model a long document and asking careful questions about it is a good use of a good tool. Answering a technician at a machine from documentation nobody uploaded, and filing the result, is a different job that needs a different product.
Which one is right for you
Claude is the right tool for
- Working through a long specification or standard in depth
- Document-heavy analysis where being wrong quietly is the main risk
- Drafting and reviewing technical writing at a desk
- Problems where you can hand it the material yourself
You need FieldPal as well when
- Nobody is going to upload the document; it has to already be indexed
- The answer depends on your own completed jobs
- The technician can't hold a device or look at a screen
- The output has to be a submitted record against a specific job
The difference is what it can reach
Give us the bulletins and repair history that nobody is going to paste into a chat window. That is the material a technician needs answered, and the reason a dedicated product exists.
